Detailing Coaches

Simple but Effective Improvements

Adding just a small amount of detail to coaches can make such a difference to their
appearance whilst being a relatively straightforward exercise and not too onerous!

 

In this instance Keen corridor connectors have been employed. They look the part but do take time to ensure a snug fit.

Modeller’s Mecca produced a press-fit card concertina corridor connector which also look the part as they come full-height of the end-gangway and coaches are more easily separated.

On Bachmann Mk1 stock a pair of Keen corridor connectors is required. However, with Kadee-coupled stock a single Modeller’s Mecca corridor connector can be use instead.

 

Within the three-car set, intermediate couplings have been replaced with Kadee No.20. If a shorter shank is used then the headstock would need altering. When coupled the metal coupling actuators can give an impression of steam-heating pipes.

Unfortunately using a pair of Keen corridor connectors restricts coaches from being lifted straight out of a formation. Other couplers can be used including Roco and Bachmann.

 

The fitting of dynamo belts can really transform the appearance of a coach and they are so simple to make.

This coach is part of a three-car set which is awaiting the fitment of brake-rodding which will occur next time it enters works.

 

Essentially the belts comprise a strip of brass formed and glued around the dynamo pulley. The ends extend just between the wheels so as to give the impression of a belt being in place!

The coach wheelsets are replaced using 14mm ø Romfords, these being set at a back-to-back dimension of 14.6mm. Underframes /bogies are painted Paynes Grey.

 

The addition of seated passengers can transform the appearance of a coach although they might look odd if the coach is stabled in a siding. Each is individually painted and glued in place. Using red paint to touch-in the butterfly handles (of the emergency alarm) also enhances the appearance of the coach.

Furthermore, the glazing units are removed and painted black around the visible mating surface with the coach side; this prevents the propagation of visible white glue around the frame.

 

Besides the passengers, the roof ventilators have been replaced with MJT cast versions and the ugly ribbing across the roof reduced with a scalpel blade down to give the visual hint of what are (in reality) the welded seam-joints.
